BROWN SWISS BREED

The Brown Swiss

Is acknowledged to be the oldest of all dairy breeds. This breed originated thousands of years ago on the territory of modern Switzerland, on the terrain covered with rocks and mountains, in extreme weather conditions. It is also sometimes referred to as "Braunvieh" because initially, Brown Swiss developed from Braunvieh beef cattle that also had extremely good milking characteristics. Over the years animal breeders were selecting the best animals for their milk production and hence developed the Brown Swiss dairy cattle.

Nowadays, Brown Swiss is renowned for many definitive characteristics. Brown Swiss have strong natural grazing instinct and efficient conversion of forage. Along with rather high milk productivity and a high fat-to-protein ratio, this breed is renowned for its meat qualities as well. Overall gentle nature and quiet temperament, longevity, and durability make this breed one of the very popular dairy breeds in the world.

The Brown Swiss breed is characterized by strong development of the musculature, a strong constitution, low-fat deposition in its meat, harmonious development of the body. Limbs placed correctly and are strong. The body is long and massive, the chest is wide and deep. Skin is dense and elastic, fur is soft and short, color is brown, with variations of shades from light to black.
